How To Start A Workout Routine
Starting a workout routine can seem intimidating, especially if you haven’t exercised in a while. However, it’s essential for maintaining physical and mental health, so it’s worth the effort. In this article, I’ll share tips on how to start a workout routine and stick to it for the long term.
1. Define your goals
The first step in starting a workout routine is to define your goals. Do you want to lose weight, build muscle, improve your cardiovascular health, or simply be more active? Once you know what you want to achieve, you can create a plan that’s tailored to your needs.
2. Choose activities that you enjoy
The key to sticking to a workout routine is to choose activities that you enjoy. If you hate running, then running every day is not going to be sustainable. Instead, find activities that you enjoy, whether it’s hiking, swimming, dancing, or lifting weights.
Here are some ideas on how to find activities in your local area:
- Check local community centers: Many community centers offer a variety of classes and activities, from fitness classes to art workshops.
- Browse local event calendars: Check local event calendars or websites to see what events are happening in your area. This could include 5k runs, concerts, festivals, or other community events.
- Join local groups: Look for local groups on social media or meetup websites that align with your interests. This could include hiking groups, running clubs, or sports groups.
- Visit local parks and recreational areas: Local parks and recreational areas often offer opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, or swimming.
- Attend fitness classes: Many gyms and fitness studios offer classes for members. Check with your local gym or studio to see what classes are available.
- Ask around: Don’t be afraid to ask friends or coworkers about local activities they enjoy. They may have recommendations for things to do that you haven’t considered before.
Remember that there are often many opportunities for activities in your local area, you just need to know where to look. By exploring different options and trying new things, you can find activities that align with your interests and meet new people in your community.
3. Start slowly
Starting a workout routine can be overwhelming, so it’s essential to start slowly. Don’t try to do too much too soon, or you’ll risk burnout or injury. Instead, start with a few minutes of activity each day and gradually increase the duration and intensity over time. Consistency is key when it comes to sticking with a workout routine, and making an effort to go to the gym regularly is crucial. Even on days when motivation is lacking, starting with just 10 minutes can help build the habit of consistent exercise over time.
4. Schedule your workouts
One of the best ways to stick to a workout routine is to schedule your workouts. Treat your workout like an important appointment that can’t be missed. Choose a time of day that works best for you, whether it’s early in the morning, during lunch, or in the evening.
5. Find a workout partner
Working out with a partner can be motivating and fun. Find a friend or family member who shares your fitness goals and workout together. Alternatively, join a group fitness class or hire a personal trainer. This is probably my favorite tip out of the whole list because it really keeps you accountable and going when you don’t feel like working out.
6. Track your progress
Tracking your progress can be motivating and help you stay on track. Keep a record of your workouts, including the duration, intensity, and type of activity. Celebrate your achievements, whether it’s running a mile without stopping or lifting heavier weights. I personally like to track my progress on a notepad on my phone, but you can also create an Excel spreadsheet, record in a paper Fitness Tracking Journal, find a template, or find a mobile app to track your progress.
Some mobile apps to help you track your progress are:
- MyFitnessPal: This app allows you to track your daily food intake, water consumption, and exercise activity. You can set goals, track progress, and connect with friends for accountability.
- Fitbit: Fitbit offers a range of fitness trackers and smartwatches that sync with the app to track daily activity, exercise, sleep, and heart rate.
- Nike Training Club: This app offers free workouts designed by Nike trainers that can be done at home or in the gym. You can track progress and set goals, as well as connect with friends for motivation.
7. Be kind to yourself
Finally, be kind to yourself. Starting a workout routine can be challenging, and there will be days when you don’t feel like working out. Don’t beat yourself up or feel guilty. Instead, focus on the progress you’ve made and how far you’ve come.
In conclusion, starting a workout routine can seem daunting, but it’s essential for maintaining physical and mental health. By defining your goals, choosing activities that you enjoy, starting slowly, scheduling your workouts, finding a workout partner, tracking your progress, and being kind to yourself, you can create a sustainable workout routine that will benefit you for years to come.
Remember to always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new exercise routine.
Starting a workout routine may be daunting at first, but with these tips, you will be well on your way to a healthy and active lifestyle.
